Apple Bar

Apple Bar

Apple bars are a fabulous fall tradition to have at your home. It’s so hard eating an entire caramel apple. I’ve improvised, I slice our apples up. Each person can decorate their apple slice with anything they want. The apples get eaten then and you can try different varieties of apples and toppings. We typically have the apple bar the first weekend of October. The kids know when it’s the first weekend of October and general conference we are going to have an apple bar. They look forward to it every year.

Picking Apples

I take the kids to the store a few days before the weekend and let them pick an apple. This is a great way for kids to try to varieties. Each year we go to a different store so we can have new options for apples to get. If apples are not someone’s favorite, we’ve also had plums and bananas at our table (and really any fruit in chocolate or caramel tastes pretty good). Luckily all my kids like apples and trying new varieties. You can go as big or small of a variety of apples or toppings as you would like.

Covering Your Apple

First, you need a liquid to glaze your apple and then some solid morsels for the toppings. They can just be put in whatever bowls you have lying around. Another way to hold a large variety of toppings are muffin tins. I think choosing the apple and having a variety of toppings is what makes this activity so fun. Plus, we’re all eating apples.

If brown tinged apples bother your kids don’t forget to throw a small amount of lemon-water on the apples to prevent them from turning brown. If your kids are young let them get used to seeing apples turn brown and they won’t be bothered by the sight.
