Homemade Rice Krispy Treats

Homemade Rice Krispies

Homemade Rice Krispy Treats are SO easy to make. If you want to boost your confidence in a dessert most people like – choose Rice Krispies. I won’t deny when Costco puts them up for sale they are a great buy. It’s especially convenient and helpful when you need things individually wrapped and store bought (like for schools).

Nostalgia

In my husband’s home growing up his mom made Rice Krispies regularly. Whenever anyone needed to bring a treat for school, church or social activity there would be homemade Rice Krispy Treats. There were no individually wrapped Rice Krispies to buy and bring to activities. It was a Jenson standard to bring these treats. Rice Krispies don’t take very much time to put together. If you are a busy person, they are a great treat to bring to an activity (even a last minute activity). Most people like Rice Krispies.

Homemade Rice Krispie Treats

Rice Krispies are quite versatile and almost every holiday or occasion has a form of Rice Krispies. I think they are also nostalgic because of the commercial I used to see on T.V. when I was younger. Do you remember the phrase, ” snap crackle and pop?” When are Rice Krispies used at your home? My favorite time to make them is for Halloween. We like making monsters and graveyards with Rice Krispie treats.

When I made the recipe on the back of the box of Rice Krispies. I wanted my Rice Krispies to be thicker. I also felt like they needed more liquid to spread more evenly. The recipe is altered a bit just to ease the spreading my Rice Krispies. I added more of everything and a little vanilla and salt for extra flavor. The extra butter and marshmallows make them even more gooey and you can get a nice pull from the marshmallows.

Ingredients

  • 8 TBSP unsalted butter
  • 16-20 oz of marshmallows*
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Pinch salt
  • 9 oz box Rice Krispies or 10 cups of Rice Krispies

Instructions

1

1) Prepare 9 x13 pan with either Parchment Paper or spray Pam on the pan.

2

2) In a large saucepan melt butter over low heat.

3

3) Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

4

4) Add vanilla, salt and Rice Krispies and stir until all cereal is covered with marshmallow.

5

5) Press mixture into prepared 9 x 13 pan. I take a bit more parchment paper to press the top so it's flat and even (and so my hands don't get sticky)

6

6) Wait for Rice Krispies to cool. Then cut them into rectangles or desired shapes.

Notes

*It depends on what size bag you get - marshmallows come in all different sizes. The mini marshmallows melt the quickest but any size will do. Just be sure to stir the pan more frequently if the marshmallows are larger so the pan doesn't burn.
